CSR Report 2016

Emphasizing environmentally and socially responsible management, Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd., as a market-leading pioneer in plastics, offers products that are safe and reliable for diverse applications in wide-ranging fields extending from telecommunications, automotive and medical to food and construction. Giving priority to efforts toward realizing a sustainable society by making a commitment to environmental impact reduction, environmental pollution prevention, biodiversity conservation, and others, and strictly adhering to corporate compliance, we strive to fulfill our social responsibility toward all our stakeholders.

Mr. Hayashi, President and Representative Director, had a dialogue with an outside expert on a theme, "Transforming Market Changes and Social Issues in to Opportunities to Create New Businesses", for the 'Interview with the President.' In the 'Special Feature', the following business models to help solve social issues are introduced:

CSR Report 2016 summarizes the Sumitomo Bakelite Group's CSR activities in fiscal 2015 and we hope that this report can help you understand our business activities.

Editorial Policy

The 2016 edition is made available in an "abridged print version" (a total of 36 pages) focusing on the activities and messages of the Sumitomo Bakelite Group that we want stakeholders to know and a "full online version" (a total of 84 pages) containing further details including our approaches to various activities, targets, and results.

We have prepared our Environmental & Social Report, beginning from the 2011 edition, in accordance with the version 3 of the G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines 2006 of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) (the GRI Application Level is B+). However, the full online version of the 2016 edition:

  • was prepared in accordance with the core option of the G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, Global Reporting Initiative.
  • receives the independent assurance by KPMG AZSA Sustainability Co., Ltd. to attest to its credibility (refer to Independent Assurance Report on page 83: right figure). The indicators that are assured are marked with a check mark on the right.
  • Environmental & Social Report was renamed to CSR Report from the 2016 edition on the occasion of the updating of the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and presenting more reports on our role in addressing social issues than before.

Regarding the preparation of the report, while giving due attention to Universal Design principles, we have striven to prepare an easy-to-understand, easy-to-read style and format for readers.

"Sustainability Assurance and Registration Mark"

This mark indicates that the reliability of the sustainability information contained in this report meets the standards established by The Japanese Association of Assurance Organizations for Sustainability Information (J-SUS; http://www.j-sus.org/english.html) for granting an assurance and registration mark.

Responsible Care Initiative

The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) launched the Responsible Care Global Charter in 2006. Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd. signed on to the Responsible Care Global Charter in 2008 to pledge a commitment to Responsible Care (RC) implementation. Since then, we have become a member company of the RC Committee of the Japan Chemical Industry Association (JCIA), voluntarily working to improve our health, safety and environmental performance. The Responsible Care Global Charter was revised in 2014 to respond effectively to current stakeholder expectations. Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd. signed the revised version of the Responsible Care Global Charter, and the Policy on Responsible Care Activities was newly established in 2015 in line with the amendment of the Charter to strengthen our voluntary initiative.
