Sumitomo Bakelite Europe NV acquires ISCC PLUS certification,
a strict control system for the use of bio-based materials.

We, Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd., are pleased to announce that Sumitomo Bakelite Europe NV (SBE), our subsidiary company in Belgium, has become the first member of our group to obtain international sustainability carbon certification/ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certification for its phenolic resins.

The ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) is already recognized worldwide as a certification system for the processing of biobased and bio-circular materials and is widely used in Europe.
The ISCC PLUS certification, for which SBE was recently certified, is a certification system that manages and secures products such as biomass raw materials and recycled raw materials manufactured by the mass balance method^* in the supply chain.
After obtaining ISCC PLUS certification, products manufactured with sustainable ingredients assigned by the mass balance method can be sold with the ISCC certification mark specified for each sustainable raw materials, and it is possible to prove that the raw materials are sustainable by ensuring transparency in the supply chain.

In recent years, there has been a growing demand for the production and development of more environmentally friendly products as well as the reduction of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions to address global environmental issues. Based on the Group of Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd. stated purpose of "Creating a sustainable society by expanding the possibilities of plastics" we believe it is necessary to take a long-term perspective in our activities, and we have established our Environmental Vision 2050 (Net Zero) in fiscal 2018, with a final year of 2050, to promote these activities throughout the Group.

ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certification is the world's first international sustainable carbon certification system for biomass and bioenergy. To date, more than 42,000 products have been certified in more than 120 countries. (As of December 2022/Total)

* Mass balance method
Mass balance is a method of allocating part of a sustainable raw materials to specific products when sustainable raw materials is mixed with petroleum-based raw materials in the production and distribution of chemical products.
