Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are common cerebrovascular diseases affecting the brain and spinal cord, with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 200. Although familial disease genes (CCM1, CCM2, and CCM3) have been identified, no approved pharmacological therapies exist.
Accelerating drug discovery requires experimental systems that faithfully recapitulate human pathology and are compatible with high-throughput screening approaches. Here, we introduce a paper published in the Journal of Angiogenesis titled “High-throughput differentiation of human blood vessel organoids reveals overlapping and distinct functions of the cerebral cavernous malformation proteins.”
In this study, a protocol was established to mass-produce blood vessel organoids from human iPS cells in a 96-well format, elucidating the functions of three CCM proteins. Furthermore, differences in the proliferation status of causative gene knockout cells were revealed, which may help explain variations in patients' clinical courses.
In these superior blood vessel organoids, the PrimeSurface™ 96 Slit-well Plate was utilized in key steps: precise control of aggregate size and efficient medium changes during hiPSC aggregate formation, and dissolving the matrix containing formed blood vessel organoids (eliminating the need for manual gel extraction).
Through these product features that contribute to process efficiency, future applications in high-throughput drug screening are highly anticipated. |

On Thursday, September 10, at 4:00 p.m., we will host the S-Bio Webinar titled “Recent Advances in Organoid Production and Drug Discovery.” In the first half of this webinar, Hideya Sakaguchi M.D., Ph.D. of the National Center for Child Health and Development-a leading figure in organoid research in Japan-will deliver a presentation on the development of neural organoids based on developmental biology and their potential applications in drug discovery.
In the second half, we will welcome Thomas Mitchell, CEO, and Prof. Ernst Wolvetang, CSO, from The Organoid Company in the Netherlands-an enterprise with cutting-edge organoid automation technology-to introduce fully automated, high-throughput organoid production technology for toxicity testing.

We exhibited and presented a poster at the 42nd Annual Meeting of The Japan Society of Drug Delivery System (DDS), held at Awa-Gin Hall, Tokushima Prefectural Folk Culture Hall, from July 30 to July 31, 2026. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the many researchers who stopped by our corporate and poster booths throughout the event.
At our poster booth, we presented our latest findings on the evaluation of nucleic acid drug delivery using Microphysiological Systems (MPS), which drew significant interest from numerous researchers in the DDS field.
Moving forward, we will continue to accumulate case studies on DDS evaluation of novel modalities utilizing MPS, and actively engage in information dissemination and exhibition activities.
